Hurricanes Re-Sign Defenseman Kaberle

June 29, 2006

Defenseman Frantisek Kaberle re-signed with the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday, a week after scoring the winning goal in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals against the Edmonton Oilers.

The 32-year-old Czech agreed to a four-year contract for $2.2 million a year.

Kaberle led Carolina’s defensemen in scoring during the regular season, finishing with 44 points (six goals, 38 assists) in 77 games. In the postseason, he had 13 points, and his fourth goal clinched the title for the Hurricanes in their 3-1 Game 7 win.

"Frank had an outstanding season and quietly led our defense in scoring," general manager Jim Rutherford said. "He is a good-skating and experienced defenseman in the prime of his career, and he will play a big role in the team’s future."
